Valentine’s Day Heart Biscuits Recipe

Today we thought we’d share this delicious heart biscuit recipe from Laura E Patrick (who is incidentally one of our wonderful team members – photographer, baker and illustrator/calligrapher extraordinaire, there’s little this talented lady can’t turn her creative hand to. This is the pefect treat to make and share on Valentine’s Day with your loved ones.


  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 250-275g plain flour, plus extra for dusting
  • 115g  unsalted butter
  • 115g caster sugar
  • 4 tbsp jam of choice or chocolate spread
  • 2 tbsp icing sugar for dusting
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • Heart or round cookie cutters


Preheat the oven to 180ºC, fan 160ºC, gas 4

Cream the butter together in a large bowl until pale and creamy. Gradually add the egg and vanilla extract. 

Sift in 250g of the flour and mix until a crumbly dough forms. Using your hands to bring the dough together  knead on a lightly floured surface until smooth. You might need a little extra flour at this point. 

Pat the dough into a flat disc then wrap in cling film and chill for 40 minutes in the fridge. 

Divide the chilled dough in two and roll on a lightly floured surface to a 3mm thickness. Feel free to use different size and shape cutters to cut out hearts or circles. Re roll the dough as require. Place the shapes on lightly greased large baking trays you’ll probably need two.

Do the same with the second batch of dough cutting out partners for the shapes above. Then take smaller cutters to stamp out the centres from each shape (so the jam shows through!). 

Place the tray in the fridge for 30minutes. Remove from fridge and bake for 12 – 14minutes until pale and golden. 

Leave to cool on the baking trays for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool.

Spread a good amount of jam on each full shape/heart and sandwich with the tops.

Dust with icing sugar and enjoy with a large mug of tea!
